DEFINITION:

Characteristics refers to those unique or collective features or qualities that is used to identify a person, place or thing.

Characteristics of computer are those features and qualities that is associated with a computer system. The characteristics of computer are as follows

1. Speed

Speed is one of the major characteristics of computer, as a computer system is capable of performing instructions a million times faster than humans. It can solve mathematical and logical problems in microseconds or nanoseconds.

2. Accuracy

Unlike humans that might make mistakes during calculations and computations, computer calculations are 100% accurate. If there are any errors in computer calculations or processing, it is as a result of wrong data input by humans

3. Diligence

A computer does not feel tired at any point in time. It has no feeling, so it is consistent in performing operations at all times, which makes it better than human beings in solving problems and performing different tasks.

4. Reliability

A computer gives out consistent result if the same data is being entered again and again. It performs task without human having to repeat the same manual directions being entered at first.

5. Automation

This has to do with computers being able to perform tasks, operation, making logical decisions, solve problems etc, with little or no human intervention.

6. Versatility

The versatility of computer means that a computer can work on different kinds of tasks and still provide consistent and accurate results. For short, it means a computer can multitask with 100% accuracy.

7. Memory

One of the major characteristics of a computer is that it has the capacity of storing data. A computer stores its data and on going operations in a place called the Memory. Computer has two (2) major memory: Primary and Secondary.

8. Storage Capacity

Different computer has different storage capacity, storage capacity refers to the amount of disk space a storage device can provide.

9. No Feeling

A computer has human feeling. It can work without getting tired or stressed up.

10. Multitasking

A computer can be able to perform more than one operation or task at the same time. It can run logical and mathematical calculations simultaneously.

11. Ability to Remember

Because of its memory and storage device, a computer remembers its previous operations by retrieving stored data very fast when needed.

12. Flexibility

This means that a computer can be used for different purposes.

13. Decision Making

A computer such as AI's can make decision after studying data inputs or patterns over time.
