Common Computer Terms

Some of the basic computer terms that you will frequently see or that is being used in this computer basics tutorial includes the following:

  • 1. CPU - Central Processing Unit
  • 2. Keyboard - Peripheral used for inputting data
  • 3. Monitor - Screen that displays information visually.
  • 4. Mouse - Used for navigation and clicking on items in the monitor screen.
  • 5. Hard Disk - Physical device that is used for storage in the computer
  • 6. Printer - Computer peripheral that is used to convert displayed information (soft copy) into hard copy.
  • 7. Booting - This is the process of turning ON a computer system.
  • 8. System - often referred to a computer device or laptop
  • 9. Application - Computer program that performs some specific functions and operations in the computer.
  • 10. Desktop - This is working screen of a computer system
  • 11. Hardware - This is the physical structure in a computer system.
  • 12. Software - These are programmed instructions that directs the computer system what to do.
  • 13. RAM - Random Access Memory that stores data temporary during operation
  • 14. ROM - Read Only Memory that stores different types of data permanently in the computer system.
  • 15. Click - When a user clicks the left mouse or taps on the touchpad to open a file or initial a process
  • 16. Double Click - When a use clicks on the mouse or taps on the touchpad twice
  • 17. File - This is an object that is used to store information on a computer system
  • 18. Folder - Physical location for storing and organizing files and documents in a computer system.
  • 19. Documents - Collection of texts, images, videos etc.
  • 20. Data - Numbers, symbols, letters, etc.
  • 21. Computer - An electronic device that accepts data as input, processes it and bring out an output called result or information.
  • 22. Bit - Smallest piece of data in a computer system which is usually in binary form
  • 23. Cable - Wires that are used for connecting devices, such as wire for connecting a computer to the printer.
  • 24. Ports - These are interface that allows peripheral devices to connect to computer by meaning of connecting cable wires.
  • 25. Drivers - These are programs that allows the operating system of a computer to communicate with specific computer hardware by giving it set of instructions.
  • 26. Adapter - These are devices that are used to connect to another two devices together that are not initially compatible.
  • 27. Interface - This is a point of contact between two devices where they can both communicate and interact.
  • 28. Directory - A directory is a location where a computer file is being placed.
