DEFINITION:

Components are various parts or element that when put together makes up something.

The computer is made up of different components, but the four (4) main hardware components are as follows:

  • 1. Input Devices - Devices that are used to input data into the computer system. Examples of input devices are: Keyboard, Punch Cards, Magnetic Tapes, Disc, Microphone etc.
  • 2. Processing Devices - These are devices that are responsible for processing data input. Examples of processing devices are: Central Processing Unit, Graphic Processing Unit, Network Cards etc.
  • 3. Output Devices - Output devices are responsible for displaying processed information in softcopy or hardcopy. Examples of output devices are: Monitor, Printers, Projectors, Speaker etc.
  • 4. Memory (Storage) - Used to store data and on-going tasks that requires memory. Examples of memory storage are: Hard disk drive, CDs, DVDs etc.

NOTE:

Some computer devices falls into the category of both input and storage. These devices includes: Hard disk Drive, Magnetic Tapes, Punch Cards, CDs, DVDs etc.
