Windows 10 Settings (Time and Language)

In this settings page, I am going to be showing you and explaining the different areas here: setting your date and time, region and language. You can also set your default voice and other in the speech settings section.

(i) Date and Time

This settings page contains option for setting your date and time.
Under the heading (Current Date and Time), the current date and time is shown.

Next you can switch ON/OFF the option time and time zone automatically.
Notice that when you switch OFF the option - time automatically, you can now manually set the time by clicking on the Change button under the small heading set date and time manually.
A dialog box appears after clicking on the change button to set time and date manually.

The next option is synchronizing your clock, you can do this by clicking on the sync now button

After this is the time zone option. This option can only become available when you switch OFF the automatic time zone option above. After doing this, you can click on the select option and click on which time zone you want to manually set for your computer system.

The last two options here is used to adjust daylight saving time automatically and select from the list of options available for show additional calendar in taskbar.

At the right side of this page under the related settings heading, you will find two links.
The first one is the Date, time and regional formatting which is the second setting section in this date and language settings that I will soon explain next.
The second link is Add clocks for different time zones. When you click on this link, it opens another dialog box which you can use for adding clocks for different time zones.

(ii) Region

In this region settings page, the first option you will see is for setting your region or country. You can do this by clicking on the select menu button, this will bring out list of country or region for you to select from.

Under the heading (Regional Format) you can also set the region format you want for your computer system.

And next is the Regional format data which displays your calendar, first day of the week, short date, long date, short time and long time.

Under these details, you will find a link Change date formats. When you click on this link, it takes you to the page where you can be able to change the date formats for your system.

On going back to the main page, at the right side under the related settings heading there is a link Additional date, time and regional settings. When you click on this link, it will take you to the clock and region settings in the control panel. As earlier said in the previous tutorials, control panel settings will be treated as a separate tutorial on its own. So, for now continue with the windows 10 settings to the end for proper understanding.


(iii) Language

This section settings have to do with the windows display language and preferred languages.

At the top part of this setting page, you will find different options which are clickable. They include the:

  • (a) Windows Display - For selecting the display language.
  • (b) Apps and Websites - For choosing the languages for application and websites.
  • (c) Regional format - this will take you back to the second settings in this section which you have already seen.
  • (d) Keyboard - when you click on this option, it takes you to another page where you can override default input methods, enable various switching input methods and enable or disable Emoji panel closing option by clicking on the checkbox beside it.

    Language Bar Options - when this link is clicked, a dialog box will display for you to set your language bar options - (hidden, floating on desktop, docked on taskbar. Also other options can also be enabled below.)

  • (e) Speech - this option when click will take you to the speech settings page in this section. This will be explained shortly after this language settings.

Moving back to the main page, under the heading (Windows display language) the selection option there is for the windows display language.

The last heading here is the (Preferred Languages). Under this heading you can add language by clicking on the Add a Language option. This will bring out a dialog page for you to select the language you want to add.
After the add language option above, the next thing you will see are list of languages you have added. For example, in this tutorial, I have added English (United States). This language is visible and you can click on it to display the other buttons.

When you click on the remove button, it will remove the language from your system. Also, when you click on the Option button it will take you to another page, which you can see the: Language pack, handwriting, set speech, set regional format and add and remove keyboard.

Coming back again to the main page, at the right side, under the related setting, you will find some useful links.

  • Administrative language settings - This link when clicked on, opens the administrative dialog box settings.
  • Date, time and regional formatting - This link when clicked, takes you to the Region settings page.
  • Spelling, Typing and keyboard settings - This link when clicked, takes you far back to the Tying settings page under the Device settings section in this windows 10 settings tutorial.

Like I said before, Microsoft always tend to attached settings that are related to each other for easy operation and switching under the related settings heading at the right side of the settings page.


(iv) Speech

From this speech settings page, under the first heading (Speech Language) you can click the selection menu option to select the language which you speak with your device. You can also choose to enable Recognize non native accents for this language by clicking on the checkbox.

The second heading here is the (Microphone). Under it you can click on the button Get started to set mic for speech recognition.

Next is the Voices, under the (Voices) heading you have option which you can choose from, in selecting the voice you want. (Microsoft David, Zirak and Mark).
You can adjust the voice speed by moving the range slider right or left. You can also listen to the voice by clicking on the Preview button to listen to the voice sample.

The next heading to this is the (Manage voices). Below this heading you can add your won custom voice by clicking on the option Add voices.

The last heading on this page is the (Installed voice packages) Under this heading are list of already installed voice packages. If you haven't installed any voice package, the only voice package you will see here are the default ones that comes with your system.
When you click on the installed voice packages, it displays the size of the package at the top right corner and also at the button it displays the Remove button which is used to remove the voice package from the computer system.
