PowerPoint - How To Use Slide Master

How To Use Slide Master

Slide master is a nice feature on PowerPoint which allows you to quickly change the layouts, style, background, etc on every other slide in the presentation by using only that one slide. For example, if you there are 30 slides in your presentation, if you change the background color of the slide master, every other slide's background color will be changed accordingly.

  • HOW TO USE SLIDE MASTER
  • Step 1 - Go to the menu tab, click on the View tab, the go to Masters view group and click on Slide Master.
  • slide-master
  • Step 2 - The slide master tab will be displayed as shown in the image below. The slide master ribbon contains the following group on related commands: Edit Master, Master Layout, Edit Theme, Background, Size and Close.
  • slide-master
  • Step 3 - Look at the slide tab; the topmost slide is the master slide, any editing that you give to that slide will automatically be applied to all the other slides below it.

  • Step 4 - Now let's try it. Go the Background group. Here you can change the color, font, effects or background styles. Or you can go to the Edith Theme group and click on Themes to edit the themes. But, in my own case here, I will be changing the Background Style.

  • Step 5 - Notice that my changes has been applied to other slides below it as shown in the image below. Now in the Close group, click on Close to go back to your slides.

  • Step 6 - Wonderful, my changes has been applied to all my slides here! This saves time of having to edit each single slide one after the another.

    note
    NOTE:

You can use this method to add pictures and other graphics. But any object added using the slide master cannot be edited from its individual slide directly; you will have to go to the master slide to edit it, delete it or adjust.

What if you want to add something to a single slide and you don't want it to appear in all other slides, how do you do this? It's very simple, kindly follow the steps below

  • Step 1 - Let's say we want to add something to only the first slide, kindly go to the first slide, below the slide master at the slide tab. Click on it and add whatever you want to add. In my own case, I will be adding a picture for this example, as shown in the image below. After adding what you want to add, click on Close in the close group.

  • Step 2 - Now looking at the slides in the slide tab you will notice that what you added only appeared in the selected slide style. (In my own case, the image I added only appeared in the second slide as shown in the image below)
  • slide-master
  • MASTER LAYOUT - You can change the slide layout of all your slides at once. You can insert placeholders, enable/disable footers and titles in individual slides. This can all be done inside the Master Layout group.

  • EDIT MASTER - In this group, you can add insert new slide master, insert new layout, rename, delete slide master and layouts. Lastly you can use the preserve button option to preserve a particular slide master so it remains with the presentation even if its not in use (this may be because you want to use it for future purpose)

  • SIZE - In this group, there is only one command which is the Slide Size. It is used to select or customize the slide size you want to use.
