How To Design A Simple Birthday Flier

Alright, so in this tutorial I am going to be showing you how to design a simple birthday flier. This tutorial is going to show you how you can be creative in your own little way using Ms-word. Follow the steps below.

I will be using real information and pictures of one my very good friend Chidera. You must not use this particular picture in this tutorial, you can also use your friend's pictures or siblings.

  • HOW TO DESIGN A SIMPLE BIRTHDAY FLIER
  • Step 1 - Open a blank Ms-word document. Click on the Insert tab, go the Illustrations group and click on the Shapes button. A dropdown list of shapes will be displayed. Click on the rectangle shape.

  • Step 2 - Draw out a rectangle shape. After that, in the Format Shape, go to the Size group (which is the last group in the Format Shape ribbon). Click inside width and height input box and type 3.3. OR you can use the buttons to adjust by clicking the up and down button inside the width and height input box.
    The rectangle will now be set to a square with dimension of 3.3inches.

  • Step 3 - In the Format Shape tab, go to the Shape Styles group and click the Shape Outline button. This will display dropdown list of options. Move downwards and click on the No Outline option to remove the outline from the shape.

  • Step 4 - In the Format Shape tab, go to the Shape Styles group and click the Shape Fill button. This will display dropdown list of options. Move downwards and click on the Picture option.

  • Step 5 - A dialog box will display for you to choose the location you want to get the picture from. Normally if you are getting the picture from your device, click on the first option.

    NOTE:

    You can also get picture from other locations by clicking on other options, but in this tutorial, I will be using one method which is getting pictures from device.

  • Step 6 - This will open the file explorer in your computer system, locate the place where the picture store. Select the picture by clicking on it, then click on the Insert button.

  • Step 7 - The picture will be successfully inserted inside the shape.

  • Step 8 - Now the picture inserted inside the shape is distorted. For you to maintain the actual shape of the picture while it is inside the square shape, click on the Shape Format tab. Go to the Size group and click on the Crop option. From the dropdown list the Fit option.

  • Step 9 - The picture is now fitted. But notice that it didn't cover or contain the full weight and height of the square shape. You shouldn’t worry about this; you can resize it to make it fill the shape.

  • Step 10 - Now crop the image as shown below, so that the areas which you want to be cropped out will be shaded in grey

  • Step 11 - Now the image is now cropped as desired filling the square shape also.

  • Step 12 - Draw another square shape to cover it as shown below.

  • Step 13 - Click on the new drawn shaped. In the Format Shape tab, go to the Shape Styles group and click the Shape Outline button. This will display dropdown list of options. Move downwards and click on the No Outline option to remove the outline from the shape.

  • Step 14 - Right click on the shape, from the dropdown list click on the Format Shape option. This will a pane from the right of the window.
    Under the Format Shape heading, click on the Fill Icon Image. Then go to Fill tab, change the color of the shape to Dark Blue from the color option. Change the Transparency to 17%

  • Step 15 - Close the pane by clicking on the close button.

  • Step 16 - Now I want insert another shape (Right Triangle). Click on the Insert tab, go to the Illustrations group and click on the Shapes button. From the dropdown list of shapes, click on right angle triangle under the basic shapes section.

  • Step 17 - Draw the right-angle triangle as shown below

  • Step 18 - In the Shape Format tab, go to the Arrange group and click on the Right-Angle Shape icon button. From the dropdown list, click on the Flip Vertical option to flip the shape vertically.

  • Step 19 - Move the shape to the edge.
    Now, we want to adjust the shape size. Right click on the shape. From the dropdown list of options click on the Edit Points option.

  • Step 20 - Now you will notice different points in the shape. Hold down the click button on the top left point of the shape and move it to the right side close to the center as shown below

  • Step 21 - The shape should now be exactly as shown below.

  • Step 22 - In the Shape Format tab, go to the Shape Styles group and click the Shape Outline button. This will display dropdown list of options. Move downwards and click on the No Outline option to remove the outline from the shape.

  • Step 23 - Also, using the similar method, in the Shape Format tab, go to the Shape Styles group and click the Shape Fill button. This will display dropdown options. Click the orange color to apply it to the shape.

  • Step 24 - Draw a circle on top of the previous shape

  • Step 25 - In the Shape Format tab, go to the Shape Styles group and click the Shape Outline button. This will display dropdown options. Click the orange color to apply it to the shape outline as shown in the image below.

  • Step 26 - Using similar method, in the Shape Format tab, go to the Shape Styles group and click the Shape Outline button. From the dropdown options, move the mouse pointer over the Weight. From the line weight options displayed, click on the two-and-half-line weight option.

    NOTE:

    Next two steps is going to be inserting the birthday picture of the celebrant. In my own case here, I will be using one of my friend's pictures. You can use any picture you want.

  • Step 27 - Click on the shape to select it, in the Shape Format tab, go to the Shape Styles group and click the Shape Fill button. From the dropdown options, click on the Picture option.

  • Step 28 - A dialog box will open for you to select the location of where you want to get the file from. (This step has already been explained before)

  • Step 29 - Ms-word will open the file explorer if you selected your device as the location that you want to get the picture from. Go to where the picture is located on your device, click the picture to select it and click on the Insert button.

  • Step 30 - The picture will now be successfully inserted inside the circle shape.

  • Step 31 - As usual, the picture is always distorted when inserted into any shape. So, click on the picture, then go to the Picture Format tab. In the Arrange group, click on the Crop option which will display dropdown list of options. Click on the Fit option from the dropdown list.

  • Step 32 - The picture is now fitted. But notice that it didn't cover or contain the full weight and height of the circle shape. You will now have to resize it.

  • Step 33 - Smartly resize the picture by holding the click button on the bottom left side edit points and drag out.

  • Step 34 - Arrange the picture very well to perfectly fit the circle as shown in the image below.

    TIP:

    Try not to focus only on cramming the steps, but to take note of how the design is being done so that you can actually use this idea to create other designs. Don't be in a haste take your time and learn it very well.

  • Step 35 - Now let's start adding text. Click on the Insert tab, then go to the Text group and click on the Text Box option. From the dropdown options, move downwards and click on the Draw Text Box option.

  • Step 36 - Draw the text box under the picture and type in the text - HAPPY as show in the image below. Font size is 8px, Bolded and the Font type is Bahnschrift Light.
    If you don't have the font type above, you can use any similar fonts.

  • Step 37 - To remove the text box outline, click on the text box, go the Shape Format tab. Inside the shape format tab, move to Shape Styles group and click on the Shape Outline. From the dropdown list displayed, click on the No Outline option.

  • Step 38 - To remove the text box fill color, click on the text box again, go the Shape Format tab. Inside the shape format tab, move to Shape Styles group and click on the Shape Fill. From the dropdown list displayed, click on the No Fill option.

  • Step 39 - Now let change the color of the text to orange in order to match the re-shaped right-angle triangle above the text
    Click the Home tab, go to the Font group and click on the font color dropdown icon. From the dropdown list display, find and click on the orange color to apply it to the text.

  • Step 40 - I want to give the text a little letter spacing. Go to the Home tab, click on the Font dialog box launcher icon (usually located at the bottom right corner of the font group)
    The font dialog box will be displayed. From the dialog box, click the Advance tab. Inside the advance tab, under character spacing section go to the Spacing selection box and change it to Expanded. You can view the sample of the changes in the Preview section. Once you are done, click on the OK button to apply changes.

  • Step 41 - The spacing should be successfully applied as shown in the image below.

  • Step 42 - Next, draw another text box and type - Birthday. Font size: 19, Font: Beautiful People Personal Use, Bold and the Font Color: Orange.
    If you don't have the exact font I used here, you can use similar fonts and move on to the next step.

  • Step 43 - Also, I am going to add little spacing to the text. Go to the Home tab, click on the Font dialog box launcher icon (usually located at the bottom right corner of the font group)
    The font dialog box will be displayed. From the dialog box, click the Advance tab. Inside the advance tab, under character spacing section go to the Spacing selection box and change it to Expanded. You can view the sample of the changes in the Preview section. Once you are done, click on the OK button to apply changes.

  • Step 44 - Draw a rectangle shape just below the Birthday text as shown in the image below.

  • Step 45 - Change the fill color of the rectangle shape to Orange. Then change the outline color of the shape to dark blue by clicking going to the Shape Format tab, inside the Shape Styles group, click on the Shape Outline button and locate and click on the dark blue color.

  • Step 46 - To add a little design in the rectangle outline. Go the Shape Format tab, inside the Shape Styles group click on the Shape Outline button. From the dropdown list, move your mouse pointer over the option Sketched and click on the Freehand line style from the list displayed.

  • Step 47 - So, it is almost done. In this step let's add the name of the celebrant. Use the text box and type in the name of the celebrant. Remove the outline and text box fill color.
    Go to the Home tab, inside the Font group change the font color to dark blue and the font size to 7.

  • Step 48 - Again, we are going to give the text quite some spacing. Go to the Home tab, click on the Font dialog box launcher icon (usually located at the bottom right corner of the font group)
    The font dialog box will be displayed. From the dialog box, click the Advance tab. Inside the advance tab, under character spacing section go to the Spacing selection box and change it to Expanded. At the left-hand side change the By spacing number input value to 2.5pt.
    You can view the sample of the changes in the Preview section. Once you are done, click on the OK button to apply changes.

  • Step 49 - The spacing will be successfully applied as shown in the image below.

  • Step 50 - Now, duplicate the Happy text and move it to the top left corner edge as shown in the image below.

    TIP:

    To duplicate text or any shape, press Ctrl + D. OR Press hold the Ctrl key and click hold the text or shape and drag it out, then release the Ctrl key.

  • Step 51 - Change the text to the birthday date.
    To fix the spacing, click the Home, go to the Paragraph group and click on the Line and Paragraph spacing option. From the dropdown list move down and click on the Remove Spacing After Paragraph option.

  • Step 52 - And finally the birthday flier is now set.

    So, you now have simple birthday flier designed in Ms-word, but how do you save it as picture and share it with your friends and families. Very simple, just continue with remaining steps.

  • Step 53 - Now you will have to group everything used in designing the flier into one. First you will have to select everything in the document.
    Click the Home tab, go to the Editing group and click on the Select button. From the dropdown list, click on the Selection Pane option which will open the selection pane at the right side of the window document.

  • Step 54 - Inside the selection pane, select all the object as shown in the image below.
    To select, hold the Ctrl key and click on the objects one after another.

  • Step 55 - Right click on the editing point of the any of the selected objects and a dropdown list will display. From the dropdown list, move the mouse pointer to the Group option and click on the Group from the displayed options.

  • Step 56 - Everything will be grouped successfully. You can also see the group in the selection pane. After this you can close the pane. But before closing the pane move to the next step.

  • Step 57 - Inside the selection pane, you can change the name of a group. Just click on the name direct and edit the name. You can hide and show object by clicking on the eye icon beside it. In the image below, I have clicked on the eye icon to hide the right-angle triangle.

  • Step 58 - You can duplicate the flier if you want as shown below.

  • Step 59 - Now to save it as picture that you can share with your friends and post it on your timelines or WhatsApp statues, Right click on the design. From the dropdown list click on the Save As Picture option.

  • Step 60 - Ms-word will open the file explorer save as dialog window. Type in the name of the design in the File Name input field. You can change the picture type to png or jpeg by clicking on the Save as type selection input.

  • Step 61 - The Birthday flier is now successfully saved as a picture inside your computer device.
