Data Validation

Data Validation is a feature in Excel which is used to what type of data should be entered in a cell or range. In this tutorial, I am going to be showing you how you can validate data proper data entry.

  • DATA VALIDATION
  • Step 1 - Open your worksheet and select the empty cell that your want to validate the data for.
    Click the Data tab and go to the Data Tools group. Inside the data tools group, click on the dropdown arrow button beside the data validation. From the dropdown list of options displayed click on Data Validation

  • Step 2 - The Data Validation dialog box will be displayed.

  • Step 3 - Inside the data validation dialog box, in the Settings tab, enter the data validation criteria of your choice. (In my own case: I want the data to be a whole number between 1 and 10)

  • Step 4 - Inside the data validation dialog box, in the Input Message tab, choose whether to show a message when the cell is selected, if yes then enter the title of the message and the message itself that you want to be shown when the cell is selected.

  • Step 5 - Inside the data validation dialog box, in the Error Alert tab, choose whether to show an alert when a wrong value is entered in the cell, if yes then enter the alert style, title of the alert and the alert message to be shown.
    After this last tab, you can click on the Ok button to save and go to your worksheet.

  • Step 6 - Now when you click on the validated cell, the input message will be displayed as shown in the image below.

  • Step 7 - And when you enter a wrong value in the validated cell the alert message will be displayed

NOTE:

Only the selected cell that is validated will be affected, if you click any other cell or enter the wrong value to another cell that is note validate you want see any input message or alert message.
