How To Calculate Median

DEFINITION:

Median is the middle number found from a group of numbers after arranging these numbers either from the lowest to the highest or from the highest to the lowest.

In this tutorial I will be showing you how to find the median of group of numbers using excel. Just follow the few steps below and in less than 5mins you will be done.

  • CALCULATING MEDIAN (FOR EVEN)
  • Step 1 - Open your excel worksheet and type in four random numbers as shown below.

    When calculating median of numbers are even, let's say: the total numbers are 4, 6, or 8 or 10. After arranging them orderly, you will have to add the two middle numbers and divide it by 2 to give you the median.

  • Step 2 - In the cell where you want to display the median, type in =MEDIAN(. The function MEDIAN in excel is used to display calculate and display the median from a given data range.

  • Step 3 - Next, type in the cell addresses containing the numbers separating them with comma. If they are much, skip this step and move to Step 4

  • Step 4 - Instead of typing the cell addresses of each number, simply type in the cell range of numbers as shown in the image below.

  • Step 5 - Type in the closing MEDIAN parenthesis and press Enter on your keyboard

  • Step 6 - After press Enter on your keyboard the median value will be displayed successfully.

  • CALCULATING MEDIAN (FOR ODD)
  • Now let's find the median of numbers that the total number is odd. This is usually very easy to do manually, just arrange the numbers orderly and pick the middle one. But if you want to use excel, use the similar steps.
  • Step 1 - Open your excel worksheet and type in five random numbers and type in the formula where you want to display the median value as shown in the image below.

  • Step 2 - After pressing the Enter key on your keyboard the median value will be displayed.
