Excel - How To Calculate Mean

How To Calculate Mean

In this tutorial I will be showing you step by step on how to calculate mean (average) of numbers using excel.

definition
DEFINITION:

Mean (also know as the average of numbers) is defined as the sum of all the values divided by the total numbers of the values.

  • CALCULATING MEAN
  • Step 1 - I will be using the data in the image below for this tutorial, you can simply create similar data and follow up with this tutorial. The data contains names of individuals and their marks, we will be calculating the mean (or average) marks here.
  • calculate-mean
  • Step 2 - Type in =AVERAGE( in the cell where the mean should be displayed. The AVERAGE function in excel is used to calculate the mean (average) of numbers.
  • calculate-mean
  • Step 3 - Now, here you can type in the cell addresses containing the marks separating them with commas. This is easy for small range of data but might longer time for big range of data. So, if maybe the data is plenty, ignore this step and move to Step 4
  • calculate-mean
  • Step 4 - Type in the range. That is type in the first and last cell (cell addresses) separating them with a colon as shown in the image below.
  • calculate-mean
  • Step 5 - Type in the closing AVERAGE parenthesis and press Enter on your keyboard.
  • calculate-mean
  • Step 6 - The mean (average) will be displayed successfully.
  • calculate-mean
  • Step 7 - ALL DONE!
  • calculate-mean

There is an alternative way in which mean can be calculated in excel. From the definition we can sum up all the values and divide it by the total numbers of the values

  • CALCULATING MEAN (ALTERNATIVE)
  • Step 1 - Type in SUM(B2:B8)/COUNT(B2:B8). SUM function will sum up all the numbers, the forward slash is used as division to divide and lastly the COUNT function counts the number of values in the cell range B2:B8.
Press Enter on your keyboard after typing to displaye the result.
  • calculate-mean
  • Step 2 - The mean (average) is now displayed successfully. The same thing with the previous one.
  • calculate-mean
