Insert Charts

Charts are majorly used to represent data in graphical form. It is often used in data analysis, comparison and presentation of results. In this tutorial I will be showing you how to insert the different charts in excel.

  • INSERTING CHARTS
  • METHOD 1
  • Step 1 - Open the worksheet that you want to insert the chart in. Select that data that you want to use for the chart.

    NOTE:

    You must select data that is to be used for representing the chart in you excel worksheet, else you won't be able to insert any charts.

  • Step 2 - Click on the Insert tab, go the Charts group. In the chart group, there are charts options which you can use by clicking on their individual dropdown arrow button which will display other sub options for you to select from.

  • By placing your mouse pointer over the chart options, it appears in your worksheet area.

  • Step 3 - After clicking on the chart you want to use it will be inserted into your worksheet.

  • METHOD 2
  • Step 1 - Open the worksheet that you want to insert the chart in. Select that data that you want to use for the chart.

  • Step 2 - Click on the Insert tab, go the Charts group and click the dialog box launcher icon at the bottom right corner of the group.

  • Step 3 (Using Recommended Chart) - From the dialog box displayed, you can click on any of the recommended charts that Excel recommends for your selected data. The preview of any chart you click on is in the second column. Click the OK button and the chart will be inserted to your worksheet.

  • Step 3 (Using Other Charts) - From the dialog box displayed, click the All Charts tab. In the first column, click on the category of charts you want to select from. In the second column inside the first row section, you can click the type of chart you want to insert. The preview of any chart you click on will be shown in the second column inside the second row.
    Click the OK button and the chart will be inserted to your worksheet.

  • FORMATTING CHARTS
  • Step - Click on the chart that you want to format. Go to the menu tab and the Chart Design will be selected. In the Chart Design ribbon, you can change the chart styles, layout, colors etc.

TYPES OF CHARTS

COLUMN CHARTS

Column chart is generally used for comparing different categories having multiple values. This chart shows the categories on the horizontal axis and the values on the vertical axis with vertical bars.

The different types of column chart includes: Clustered, Stacked, 100% Stacked, 3-D Clustered, 3-D Stacked, 3-D 100% Stacked and 3-D Column Charts.

LINE CHARTS

Line chart is used to show continuous data over time. The horizontal axis in line charts usually represents time which might be arranged from low to high order.

The different types of line chart includes: Line, Stacked Line, 100% Stacked Line, Line with Markers, Stacked Line with Markers, 100% Stacked Line with Markers and 3-D Line Charts.

PIE CHARTS

Pie chart is used to show different sections of which is proportional to the total sections of a quantity. Pie chart is usually represented in percentages.

The different types of pie chart includes: Pie, 3-D Pie, Pie of Pie, Bar of Pie and Doughnut.

BAR CHARTS

Bar chart is also used for comparing different categories having multiple values. This chart shows the categories on the vertical axis and the values on the horizontal axis with horizontal bars.

The different types of bar chart includes: Clustered, Stacked, 100% Stacked, 3-D Clustered, 3-D Stacked and 3-D 100% Stacked.

AREA CHARTS

Area charts are used to represent the change of one or more quantities over a period of time or within an interval of time.

The different types of area chart includes: Area, Stacked, 100% Stacked, 3-D Stacked, 3-D 100% Stacked and 3-D Area.

X Y (SCATTER) CHARTS

The XY (Scatter) Charts is usually used for comparing numerical and statistical values. This charts usually have two values which are the plot for Y and X axis.

The different types of X Y (scatter) chart includes: Scatter, Scatter with Smooth Lines and Markers, Scatter with Smooth Lines, Scatter with Straight Line and Markers, Scatter with Straight Lines, Bubble and 3-D Bubble.

STOCK CHARTS

Stock Charts is mainly used to show the fluctuation of stock data usually in volumes, prices, etc. This chart is mostly used in to plot stock prices, rainfall and possibly change in whether temperature.

The different types of stock chart includes: High Low Close, Open High Low Close, Volume High Low Close and Volume Open High Low Close.

SURFACE CHARTS

Surface charts are three-dimensional charts that helps us to find optimum combination between different types of data points.

The different types of surface chart includes: 3-D, Wireframe, Contour and Wireframe Contour.

RADAR CHARTS

Radar charts are used to compare different aggregate values. It usually has one axis for each category which uses the same scale.

The different types of radar chart includes: Radar, Radar with Markers and Filled Radar.

TREEMAP CHARTS

Treemap charts is a type of chart in excel, which is used for hierarchical representation of data. Branches are represented by rectangles and the sub branches will be represented by smaller embedded rectangles.

SUNBURST CHARTS

Sunburst chart is also used to for display hierarchical data whereby each branch is represented by a ring. Sunburst charts looks like the pie chart if there is only one level.

HISTOGRAM CHARTS

This is like a bar chart graph that organizes data into specified ranges. It groups data using vertical bars with varying height depending on the values.

Box and Whisker charts commonly used when you want to show how the data is spread out.

WATERFALL CHARTS

Waterfall charts is another excel charts that is used to for showing positive and negatives values of different aspects it is being used for. It shows the total as values are added or subtracted.

FUNNEL CHARTS

Funnel charts is a type of chart in Excel that is see the reduction or deduction of values in multiple stages. Funnel charts are mostly used to visualize earnings or sales over time (weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly)

COMBO CHARTS

This is type of charts that combines other different types of charts to displayed result.

The different types of combo chart includes: Clustered Colum - Line, Clustered Column - Line on secondary axis, Stacked Area - Clustered Column and Custom Combinations.
