Subtraction In Excel

In this tutorial I am going to be showing you how to perform subtraction in Excel using the methods below.

  • METHOD 1
  • I will be using the data in the image below. You can replicate the data in the image or you can create your own data. All that is needed is data that you can use for this subtraction in Excel exercise.

  • Step 1 - Click or Select the cell you want the subtracted result to display.

  • Step 2 - Inside the cell type in the - Equals to = and opening parenthesis (. Then type in the address of the cell you want to subtract data from (Minuend). In my own case the cell address is B1.

  • Step 3 - Type in the minus sign - and type in the address of the cell being subtracted (Subtrahend). In my own case the cell address is B2. And lastly type in the closing parenthesis). Then press Enter key on your keyboard

  • Step 4 - Data in B2 is now subtracted from B1 giving the result as displayed in the image below.

NOTE:

If you have multiple subtraction, after getting the first result just click on the small black box at the bottom right corner of the cell and drag to other cells and subtraction results for other column will be displayed.

  • METHOD 2 (MULTIPLE DATA)
  • I will be using the data in the image below. You can replicate the data in the image or you can create your own data. All that is needed is data that has multiple data that you can use for this subtraction in Excel exercise.

  • Step 1 - Click or Select any of the cell you want the subtracted result to display.

  • Step 2 - Inside the cell type in the - Equals to = and opening parenthesis (. Then type in the addresses of the cells you want to subtract data from (Minuend) separating them with colon :. In my own case the cell address are B2:C2:D2.

  • Step 3 - Type in the minus sign - and type in the addresses of the cell being subtracted (Subtrahend). In my own case the cell addresses are B3:C3:D3. And lastly type in the closing parenthesis). Then press Enter key on your keyboard

  • Step 4 - Data in B3:C3:D3 is now subtracted from B2:C2:D2 giving the result as displayed in the image below.
