Password Workbook

Securing your workbook so that unauthorized persons cannot access it has now become a common thing today. In this tutorial, I will be showing you how to put password in your excel workbook so that people cannot just open it and alter details without your permission or you giving them access to do so.

  • HOW TO PUT PASSWORD IN WORKBOOK
  • Step 1 - Open the workbook that you want to put password. In my own case, I will be using the workbook in below for this tutorial. You can use any workbook sheet of yours to learn this.

  • Step 2 - Click on the File Tab to open the home window. Then click the Info option.

  • Step 3 - In the info section, click on the Protect Workbook option as shown in the image below.

  • Step 4 - From the dropdown list displayed, click on the Encrypt with Password option.

  • Step 5 - The encrypt document dialog box will be displayed. In this dialog box, type in your password in the Password input field and click on the OK button.

  • Step 6 - Next is the confirm password dialog box. Here you will have to confirm your password by entering it again in the Password input field. Then click the Ok button.

  • Step 7 - If the password you entered in the confirm password dialog box is not the same with the first one, excel will display a popup dialog box telling you that the password is not identical. Click on the OK button to return back to the and enter the correct password in the confirm password dialog box.

  • Step 8 - Your workbook is now fully protected.

  • Step 9 - Now, when closing the workbook, even if you didn't edit anything on the workbook excel will ask you whether you want to your save changes. Click the Save button.

    NOTE:

    If you click Don't Save after adding password to your workbook, the password will not be saved to your workbook.

  • Step 10 - Now, open your excel application and try and open the workbook again.

  • Step 11 - Excel will request for the password to the workbook. Enter the password to open workbook.

  • REMOVE PASSWORD FROM WORKBOOK
  • Step 1 - Open excel application, and click on the workbook that you want to remove the password. Excel will request for the password to that workbook. Enter the password to open the workbook.

  • Step 2 - If you type in the correct password the workbook will be opened.

  • Step 3 - Click on the File which will open the home window. Then click on the Info option. In the info section, click on the Protect Workbook option as shown in the image below.

  • Step 4 - From the dropdown list displayed, click on the Encrypt with Password option.

  • Step 5 - The encrypt document dialog box will be displayed. In this dialog box, delete the password in the Password input field and click on the OK button.

  • Step 6 - The workbook will now be unprotected. The workbook no longer has a password. Remember to save changes when exiting so that when you try opening the workbook again, excel will not request for password.
