Standard Deviation can be defined as the average amount of variability in range of data. It can also be defined as the positive square root of variance

In this tutorial I will be showing you how to calculate standard deviation of numbers in excel following the simple steps below.

  • CALCULATING STANDARD DEVIATION
  • Step 1 - The excel worksheet image below, contains names of students and their marks. Open your worksheet and create similar data for this tutorial, we will be calculating the standard deviation of the marks of students.

  • Step 2 - In the cell where the standard deviation value will be displayed, type in =STDEV(. The STDEV function in excel is used to calculate the standard deviation of numbers.

  • Step 3 - Enter the cell range of the data that you want to get the standard deviation from as shown in the image below.

  • Step 4 - Next, type in the closing STDEV parenthesis and press Enter on your keyboard.

  • Step 5 - The value of the standard deviation of the marks of students in our excel sheet will be successfully displayed.

  • CALCULATING STANDARD DEVIATION (ALTERNATIVE)
  • Step 1 - Make sure the cell you want to display the standard deviation value is selected.
    Click on the Formulas tab, then go to the Function Library group and click on the Insert Function option.

  • Step 2 - The Insert Function dialog box will be opened.

  • Step 3 - In the dialog box, inside the search input field type in STDEV and click the GO button at the right side. The STDEV function will be selected under Select a function list. Click the OK button to continue.

  • Step 4 - The Function Argument dialog box will be displayed. In this dialog box, type in the range of data in the Number input. Notice that the numbers in that range will immediately display by the side.
    The standard deviation will also be displayed in the dialog box in two places: Just below the Number input and at the left corner of the dialog box with a tag Formula result.
    Click the OK button to continue.
