How To Find Mode

DEFINITION:

Mode is the number that occurs the most in a range of data. Any number that occurs the highest number of times is called the Mode.

Finding the numbers that occurs the most might be very easy when the data are not much, but what if you are working with large data. In the tutorial, I will be showing you how to find the mode in range of numbers.

  • FINDING THE MODE IN RANGE OF NUMBERS
  • Step 1 - Open your worksheet, and type in some random data similar to the one in the image below. You can ignore the formatting to speed up learning process.

  • Step 2 - Select the cell where you want to display the mode value. You can do it like mine in the image below.
    Click on the Formulas tab and go to the Function Library and click on the Insert Function option.

  • Step 3 - The Insert Function dialog box will be displayed.

  • Step 4 Now, inside the search input field at the top, type in the function MODE and click on the GO button. Under the Select a Function list, the mode function will be selected. Then click on the OK button to continue.

  • Step 5 - The Function Argument dialog box will be displayed. Now if you check the Number1 input field, you will notice that range value didn't cover for everything that was there. So click the icon to the right just immediately after the input field.

  • Step 6 - The Function Argument dialog box will be reduced and resized to just the input field for the data range.

  • Step 7 - Now, select the data range using your mouse. After selection, notice that the data range will be automatically added to the function in the cell, in the function argument input field and also in the formula bar.
    Click the icon to the right just immediately after the input field again as shown in the image below.

  • Step 8 - The Function Arguments dialog box will now be displayed in full again. Now the correct that range is set, you can view the numbers in that range by the side of the input field. The mode is displayed is two place here in this dialog box: First just immediately below the input field and second at the bottom left corner of the dialog box with the tag name Function result.
    Now simply click on the OK button.

  • Step 9 - This answer will now be displayed in the worksheet successfully.

  • ALTERNATIVE SHORT METHOD
  • Step 1 - Open your worksheet, and type in some random data similar to the one in the image below. You can ignore the formatting to speed up learning process.
    Now type in the mode function and the range of data in the cell that you want the result to display and press Enter on your keyboard.

  • Step 2 - The answer will be displayed successfully!
