Freezing Panes

Freeze panes in Excel is a feature that allows you to locks rows or columns while scrolling vertically or horizontally.

  • FREEZING PANES
  • Step 1 - Open your Excel worksheet and type in some data for this tutorial. I will be using the data in the image below for this tutorial, you can copy and paste this data as it would be help while you are learning.

  • Step 2 - To freeze rows, click the View and go to the Window group and click on the Freeze Panes. From the dropdown options click on Freeze Top Row to freeze the top row.

  • Step 3 - Now try scrolling upwards (vertically) you will notice that the top row remains visible while scrolling and the other rows passes under it.

  • Step 4 - To freeze columns, Click the View and go to the Window group and click on the Freeze Panes. From the dropdown options click on Freeze First Column to freeze the first column.

  • Step 5 - Now try scrolling side ways to the left (horizontally) you will notice that the first column remains visible while scrolling and the other column passes under it.

  • FREEZING ROWS AND COLUMNS AT THE SAME TIME
  • Step 1 - To freeze row and column, first select the point at which you want the row and column to be frozen as shown in the image below.
    Then click the View and go to the Window group and click on the Freeze Panes. From the dropdown options click on Freeze Panes

  • Step 3 - Now try scrolling upwards (vertically) or side ways (horizontally) you will notice that the top row and the first column (because of the selection point) remains visible while scrolling and the other rows and columns passes under them.

  • Step 1 - To unfreeze rows, click the View and go to the Window group and click on the Freeze Panes. From the dropdown options click on Unfreeze Panes
